I apologize for that. Let me catch up!

We played Soddy Daisy on the Thursday before Easter. Those matches went pretty much the way I expected. It was my first meeting with our nearest, non-district, geographical rival. On the Boys' side, the Trojans lost five seniors from last year's team (one of which earned a scholarship to play at Tennessee Wesleyan), so I knew they were in rebuilding mode. Our upperclassmen-heavy lineup easily dispatched their inexperienced team 8-1. With the match win already secured, Jae Yoo once again offered to sit out of the lineup to allow someone else to get some varsity experience. Freshman, Nathan Terrell got his first varsity singles win at the #6 spot.

It was completely opposite on the Girls' side. With only one freshman in their top six, Soddy is one of the toughest public school teams in our area. Our girls were no match, especially playing without our #3 Seed-- Michelle Phillips, was out sick. Kudos to Lydia Lindsey for coming on short notice ready to play a very tough opponent. It was her first varsity singles match!

Here are the results:

Soddy Daisy Girls def. Hixson Girls 9-0

Girls Singles:

Callie Brannon def. Candace Cline 8-2
Kaitlyn Oscai def. Whitney Clack 8-4
Alex Schafer def. Ford/Johns 8-2
Barr/Yoo def. Keef/Bennett 8-3

After the long weekend, things got a little crazy here in the Chattanooga area. My thoughts and prayers go out to all who were adversely affected by this terrible storm system. We had to cancel two district matches due to the storm-- we will try to make up Red Bank and CSAS early next week.

After two days of good weather we did manage to get our JV match taken care of on Signal Mountain. I greatly appreciate everyone who came out to play and support our young players. We had eight girls (Michell and Haylee came up to play for the JV) and two boys show up to play on a beautiful day. Everyone got a singles and a doubles match. Though we did not manage to score any victories, everyone got some valuable experience. Coach Dressler has a very deep team at Signal Mountain, none of the players we played today were in his top 9 and several were eighth-graders! Still, the only difference between those girls and boys and our's is playing time. His players know that it takes a year-round commitment to get better at tennis. That's the lesson I hope our players learned today.

Here are the results:

Signal Mtn JV Girls def. Terrell/Billingsley 8-6

Up Next: Tentatively: April 2, Monday @ HOME vs. CSAS. If we have school on Monday and if the weather cooperates, we will play CSAS. Our girls should win this time, if everyone in our top six shows up. Our boys have to play better than they have thus far this season to have a chance. No practice or playing over the last five days does not make me very confident going in to this one.

Wildcats Swat Yellow Jackets!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-jRIabqYgg3I/Ta4p_AW8CoI/AAAAAAAAAHc/tP5kHkJYAnM/s320/Girls_2011.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5597457549272812162" />

Nearly a complete win today for the boys and girls teams. I really thought our boys had a chance to win this one, but it was not in the cards. I knew the girls were in for a tough day. Five of the lady Golden Eagles are either juniors or seniors. They are an experienced and well-coached team.

In the end, this is a non-district match, and a great opportunity for our kids to play some good players.

Here are the results:

Rhea County Girls def. Hats off to the East Hamilton boys for pulling off another nail-biter. Once again our boys came up one win shy of a victory. Interestingly, we did not sweep doubles this time. Jae Yoo (pictured above) had a stunning victory at #6 singles today, 8-6. Stunning because the last time we played the Hurricanes, Jae lost to the same opponent 8-0. I don't give very many hugs, but I gave Jae a big one after that win. It was a gritty and gutsy performance. He had lost at #3 doubles, against East Hamilton's #4 & #2 seeds playing together at #3 doubles, and I told him I needed him to win at singles for us to have a chance. He delivered. My #2 doubles team, George and Cory, trounced two East Hamilton players that aren't in their top six (draw your own conclusion there). Things were a little more interesting at #1 doubles, but our boys (Dylan and Myles) prevailed in a tiebreak. Still with three singles matches on the court, all we needed was one win. The Hurricanes slammed that door shut.

On the girls side of the house, we improved a bit from our showing last time. Whitney again managed to get a win at #2 singles. We got a surprise win at #3 doubles. Abby O'Rear (filling in for Kayla Morgan) and Michelle Phillips beat the same two girls that beat my #2 girls team last time we played at Standifer Gap. Again, I think all my girls battled today against a very talented team.

Here are the results:

East Hamilton Girls def. I'm starting to sound like a broken record, but the Rhea County girls are going to be tough. This is a bit of a down year for Golden Eagles on the boy's side. I realize this is a down year for Ooltewah, but this one felt good today. We have played the Owls in each of the three seasons I've been head coach at Hixson. Since they are not in our district (they are a AAA school) we only face them once per year. In our first two meetings, we won a grand total of 3 individual matches-- Boys and Girls. Let me put that another way: Ooltewah 33, Hixson 3. Not to put another exclamation on how dominant the Owls have been, but those three wins we got were generally against players not in their top six, once the score was comfortably in their favor. Today, we evened up those numbers a bit. A complete victory for the girls, 9-0, and the boys did pretty well losing only two matches. Neither the Boys or Girls lost a doubles match! Nice win for Dylan Millwood (pictured above) at #1 Singles. Meanwhile, our #1 girl, Candace Cline, is on a nice little three match winning streak in singles.

Here are the results:

Hixson Girls def. What can I say? I don't think there is a match on our schedule that is more crucial to us than this one on the boys' side. The Hurricanes nipped us 5-4, in our first meeting a couple of weeks ago. We need to be at our best tomorrow. The girls are in for a tough one, as the Lady Hurricanes are unbeaten in our district, and they thoroughly dismantled our team 8-1 in our first meeting.

Can't Beat the Heat.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 204px; height: 320px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-1G05Pir2OcI/TaENg4E1IZI/AAAAAAAAAG0/CTLne8QAyHU/s320/heat-exhaustion-2.gif" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5593767070630486418" />

Another first for me today in my short tenure at Hixson. We had our first Junior Varsity Match. It was just the girls, but I can't help but think we've come a long way baby. Last year I was forfeiting matches because I couldn't get six girls to show up for varsity matches, and today I had seven show up for a JV match.

Unfortunately, it was a very hot day. I think it felt even worse because we've had such cool temperatures recently. I had two girls who suffered some mild, heat related symptoms. I'll take a few minutes out of our practice time next week to discuss hydration. Hopefully, this won't happen again. Due to the heat, some of the singles matches were shortened to six games.

So a lot of girls got some much needed experience today-- seven to be exact. Technically, I have eight girls on the Junior Varsity team. Two of them, however, were unable to play due to prior commitments. Big thanks to Corynne Schannuth for filling in on short notice for Dista Rahyu. Corynne plays #5 on the varsity, but played #1 for the JV today. I needed seven players, because that's how many I thought I would have when I talked to Coach Webb earlier in the week.

So playing a program as deep as CCS, I hope my girls realize just how much they have to learn. I saw some good playing from just about all of my girls, but I also saw quite a few cringe-worthy moments. We'll talk about it next practice (Wednesday) and see what we can do to get better.

Here are the results:

CCS JV Girls def. Hixson JV Girls 10-0

Singles:

Kruesi Brock def. Corynne Schannuth 6-4
Sarah Smith def. Abby O'Rear 8-2
Candace Reagan def. Cicely McCoy 6-1
Katheryn Hoffecker def. Meagan Dagnan 8-6

Doubles:

Brock/Bosshardt def. Billinglsey/McCoy 8-1

Up Next for the JV: Saturday, April 23 @ Signal Mountain. Just like CCS, Signal Mountain has a very deep team, it should be another tough one.

Rough Day.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 213px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-UCDYbUIJznU/TZ5p1zFt-JI/AAAAAAAAAGs/I9CG99rfk5c/s320/Abby.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5593024160208910482" />

I'm scratching my head a little bit tonight. I fully expected to get a win today from my girls, and we almost pulled it off even while missing my #2 seed. A BIG "Way To Go!" to Abby O'Rear (pictured above) who got two varsity wins for the girls in singles and doubles. Abby found out about two hours before our scheduled match time that she would be playing in the number six slot in singles and the three slot in doubles, and she handled it beautifully. There were a couple of close matches in singles that got away from us, but we still had a chance with our #2 doubles team on the court and Hixson and CSAS tied at 4 wins apiece. Corynne and Haylee lost a match that looks like a blowout on paper (final score 2-8) but it was not for lack of effort. Down 2-5, the next three games all went to deuce. As you may or may not know, we play No-Ad scoring in High School Tennis, so at deuce the next point wins. It could have just as easily been 5-5, then who knows? Instead, the Lady Patriots won those three crucial points and the match was over. I told them that they should get a chance to play the same girls again on April 28. I think they'll be ready to even the score.

On the boys side of things, BIG thank-you to Jae Yoo and Eric Barr for getting a win at #3 doubles and keeping CSAS from scoring a shutout. To be honest, I'm a little excited by the results. Many of the matches were close. This is the defending District 6-A/AA championship team from last year that lost one guy from their top six. I was expecting to get blown out. Heck, our #2 doubles team snatched defeat from the jaws of victory, as they were up 5-2 before dropping 6 of the next 7 games. George Ozborn and Eric Barr battled ferociously against their opponents in singles. Both of those matches could have gone the other way with a few breaks. I guess my point is, we have three weeks before we see this team again. CSAS is not untouchable. It's up to our players to decide if they are going to close the gap.

Here are the results:

Girls Singles:

Candace Cline (H) def. Both the Boys and Girls teams won 7-2 for a nice sweep. Lots of highlights on the day. I'd like to especially single out Dylan Millwood and Myles Goforth who have really started playing good doubles together over the last week or so, and won in the #1 doubles slot today. Really, all the boys are playing very good doubles. Just in case you haven't noticed, we've only lost one doubles match in our last three contests (8-1).

On the girls side, I hate to be a little negative on a day that the Lady Wildcats won seven of nine matches, but honestly, I think we could have beaten Central 9-0. Candace Cline got a good win today. She won 9-7 over a girl who beat her the first time we played the Purple Pounders this season.

In all we had eight players win both their singles and doubles matches, and since Mary Phillips (Cory & Michelle's Mom) took so many awesome pictures today, I thought I'd post pictures of all of my sweepers today. Here they are:

<img style="display:block; There's good news and there's bad news. First the good news. The Lady Patriots seem to be in a rebuilding phase, and if our girls play their best, we should score another district win. The bad news: The defending boys, District 6-A/AA champions graduated one player from last year's lineup and he was their #5 seed. Our work is cut out for us!

Silverdale Girls Take Care of Business.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 202px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-hmrke0U6jUI/TZZ3SvBTY0I/AAAAAAAAAFM/227TuTsZx8U/s320/court_rain_wideweb__430x272.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5590787151170331458" />

If you had asked me last Friday, if we would be able to get all four matches in this week, I would have said you were crazy. Whew!

The girls had their best showing of the week today, by getting two wins in doubles. The Lady Seahawks were a little more stingy in singles, and none of our girls managed to win more than four games. Today was the coldest day of the week by quite a few degrees. I should have saved that snow image I used on Monday for today! Seriously, I would not have been surprised if a few snowflakes had started coming down this afternoon at Standifer Gap.

It's always the toughest to do these recaps when both teams lose, but let's just stick with the bright spots, shall we? First, BIG congratulations to Whitney Clack (pictured above) for getting the girls their first win of the week! 8-1 feels a heckuva lot better than 9-0, which is what we posted on Monday and Tuesday. I'm not going to kid you, when I made this schedule up, I knew this week was going to be tough. I also knew it would be the hardest on the girls. I fully expect this East Hamilton girls team to win our district. I was prepared to see bigger margins of victory in just about every match. Instead, I saw our girls fight. Maybe playing Walker Valley and CCS earlier in the week helped after all.

As for the boys, let me just say that I don't think I've ever been as proud of our doubles play as I was this afternoon. Have we swept double before? Sure. Have we ever swept doubles from a team that on paper seems much better than us? Not since I've been here. I was able to practice with the boys yesterday and I told them, their only chance at beating the Hurricanes was by sweeping the doubles. We had a terrific practice yesterday, and they did exactly that: they gave themselves a chance to beat East Hamilton. One win shy, but we had our chance. Nice day for Eric Barr who was the only player to stay perfect on the day by winning his singles match.

Here are the results:

East Hamilton Girls def. Walker Valley, who are in a bit of a rebuilding phase, came in with very talented #1 and #2 seeds. Those two players, both seniors, accounted for all the scoring the Mustangs would accumulate on the day. They both won their singles matches and together they won at #1 doubles. Other than that, it was all Hixson. Myles Goforth, Eric Barr and Jae Yoo (our #4, #5 and #6 seeds) were all perfect on the day winning in singles and doubles, sealing the victory. Big congratulations to Eric Barr (pictured above), who was down 2-6, but ended up coming back to win his singles match in tiebreaker.

The Walker Valley girls came into today's match unbeaten, and they are a very formidable team. Perhaps not as dominating as the CCS squad we faced yesterday, but the Lady Mustangs did not allow any of our girls to get on the scoreboard. VERY IMPORTANT district match for the boys. The Hurricanes lost their top two seeds from last year, but they still have a solid team. We had a very difficult non-district match today at Chattanooga Christian. If you're a college basketball fan, this would be like putting Duke or North Carolina on your non-conference schedule. It rained most this morning, and for awhile there it looked like we might have to cancel. The sun never really poked out, but it was still dry enough by 4:00pm to play, even if it was a little chilly.

Great turnout today from the parents by the way, I'd like to thank each and every one of you who came out to support our team. I know it means a lot to the kids, even if they don't always tell you. For those of you who made it out to CCS, I'm sure you noticed their giant billboards commemorating all of their past glories. Sue Webb has built quite a program over there, and her teams are always competitive. You saw that today, especially on the girls' side. You see, that Duke/North Carolina analogy isn't too far off the mark!

We had to scratch and claw for every point and game we won. Although it is tough to mention a highlight when a team gets shut out, I have got to mention the effort by Michelle Phillips at #3 singles. Although she only managed to win two games, she absolutely gave the CCS girl everything she could handle. A valiant effort against a very tough opponent. All in all, we'll chalk this one up as a learning experience. Remember, we've got three freshmen girls in the top six. Right now they are playing for the future.

On the boys' side, I actually thought we could have done a little better. Perhaps CCS deserved to win today, but it definitely should have been closer. Dylan Millwood took care of business at #1 singles and Jae Yoo did the same at #6, but those were the only two W's we got. I don't think the score indicates how close we actually are to the Chargers in talent. I was especially disappointed in our poor performance in doubles. I blame myself for this. I have been trying to figure out what lineup works best, and I have not found a solution. I'll stick with this one for now, because we don't have time to change it before our next match tomorrow.

Here are the results:

CCS Girls def. Not sure how good the Mustangs are this year. I know that they have fielded good teams in recent years, and they are in a district 5-AAA (so they are a little bigger than Hixson). Should be a good match for both the boys and girls.

Convincing Sweep Today!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 193px; height: 112px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-3sGjIO-SmuY/TYKrm1QALmI/AAAAAAAAAEs/tSMw3NNIquk/s320/ag00321_.gif" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5585215171510414946" />

Both the boys and girls teams took care of business today in District play, which means I get to use my favorite image (the one above with the moving broom)! It's nice to get a sweep, but it's even sweeter when it is against one of the schools in our District.

Lots of highlights today. First, let me just list all the players who won their Doubles and Singles matches: Whitney, Michelle, Haylee, Kayla, George, Cory, and Eric. Alex Shuford, subbing for Jae Yoo who had a hand injury, got a hard fought win at #6 singles, marking the first Varsity singles win of his career at Hixson. Nathan Terrell, a freshmen, also got his first action in a varsity match. He came in with Eric Barr and picked up a win at #3 doubles.

One of the best comebacks I've seen since taking the job at Hixson, was at #2 singles on the girls side. I did not see what happened at the start of the match, but by the time I got down there Whitney was down 1-5. After watching a few points, I could tell Whit was clearly the better player. She lost that game though-- now it was 1-6. Luckily, coaching is allowed during matches in High School tennis, so I got to speak with her on the change over. I told her that I thought she was the better player, and she agreed. I told her to take it one point at a time. She's a good listener, because she proceeded to win the next 7 games for the win, 8-6.

Very nice way to head into Spring Break. Which reminds me. There will be mandatory practice next week at the Racquet Club at our normal time for anyone not going out of town. If you are going out of town, I need a parent to let me know. We have got a ridiculous week coming up right after Spring Break with four matches in five days (who made this schedule?). We have a lot of work to do.

Here are the results:

Hixson Girls (1-1) def. About a half dozen of us had pretty much rolled most of the water off of all six courts at Rivermont Park and we started to feel a few sprinkles. I kept telling the kids to pretend it wasn't raining and to finish rolling the big wet spots. That seemed to work. By three o'clock, I had the top six boys and girls warming up and we never thought about rain again.

I really appreciate all the players who got to the courts early and helped me get them ready to go, could not have happened without you. I also appreciate all the parents who got your kids to the match, even though I threw you a last minute curve ball and had you take them someplace completely different than you expected.

As for the matches, they went almost-kinda-sorta the way I expected. I thought our boys had a good chance, and they proved me right. We took five of six singles matches, which meant that we had the match won heading into doubles. I sat my top two players down, and we still managed to take two of three from the Lions in Doubles. Big congratulations to Myles Goforth who managed to win both his singles and doubles matches today in his Hixson debut. Jae Yoo teamed up with Myles at #2 doubles, also swept the day with a win at #6 singles. Alex Shuford and Russ Rebennack, who are my #4 doubles team, got a quality varsity win at #3 doubles.

On the girls side, I thought the defending District Champs would have a much tougher team. So I told my girls they were in for some tough matches. As it turned out, The Lionettes were not nearly as good as I had projected, but they were still good enough to take care of business. We did get some notable wins: Norah Soufraji (back from our 2009 team!) won at #3, Haylee Gossett #5 and Corynne Schannuth #6. Both Haylee and Corynne are freshmen, so this marks their high school debut-- nice way to start the career!

I thought the girls could have played a little better strategically in doubles, but that's something we can work on. I know it doesn't feel great to lose, but we'll see this team again on April 27th, and I promise we will do better.

Here are the Results:

Red Bank Girls (1-0) Defeat Hixson Girls (0-1): 6-3

Singles:

Amy Metcalfe (RB) def. Another important district match and due to a school-related band function, we are not going in at full strength. Last year we only played the girls once, so I have no idea what to expect. The Central boys had a very good #1 player, but not much else. I do remember that they seemed much better the second time we played them, so I'm guessing we're in for a dog fight. Chattanooga Central plays their home matches at Lakeside Park. Here are the directions:

Directions to Lakeside Park (Chattanooga Central’s Home Courts)

Take Hwy 153 South (Toward Hamilton Place) to Exit 5A (Hwy 58 North) Stay on 58 for a little over a mile, until you see the Taco Bell on the Right. There’s a traffic light just beyond the restaurant at Oakwood—Take a RIGHT. Stay on Oakwood for approximately half a mile through a four way stop. Take the next LEFT at Swann Road. Almost immediately you will see the Lakeside Park ball fields and then the tennis courts just beyond on the left side of the Road. There’s a big sign that says “Lakeside Youth Sports Complex” in the parking lot!

It's a New Year!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 256px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_BrV1vbE42B8/TSM2NWljXGI/AAAAAAAAADo/kRK9TDyo0-Q/s320/2011.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5558345968134610018" />

Conditioning has started! A group of very dedicated Hixson High School tennis players old and new showed up on a relatively mild January day to knock the cobwebs off their game. Returning players in attendance: Candace Cline (SR), Dylan Millwood (JR), Cory Phillips (JR), Jae Yoo (JR), Whitney Clack (SO) & Kayla Morgan (SO). Some new players who showed up: Meagan Dagnan (SO), Nathan Terrell (FR) & Emily Davis (FR).

Though I would have liked to have seen more players, I'm quite pleased with the turnout as these workouts are voluntary and the students are technically still on vacation. Once school starts on Wednesday, I expect the numbers to swell a bit. Which reminds me: We got lucky this week as the temperatures are going to be somewhat warm for this time of year, but these kids need to be dressed properly for the weather. They need to dress in layers of moisture wicking materials. Wiki has a great article about it if you need some direction: Layered Clothing.

We still need to have a parent meeting, but I'm not sure when that is going to take place yet. Hopefully within the next two weeks, but certainly before the end of January. I'll keep you posted. In the meantime, I could use all the help I can get in recruiting new players (especially underclassman boys!). So if you know of anyone who might be interested in playing tennis (no experience required) please send them my way.

Thanks, and as always feel free to call, text, or email me with any questions or comments.

The Regular Season Ends In Another Split.

I think I predicted our Boys would do better in our second match against Red Bank. Our team proved me right. We narrowly lost the first time around, 5-4. Today we took care of business and won 7-2. Big Congrats to our 3-6 seeds, who were all perfect on the day, winning their singles and doubles matches!

On the Girls side, what can you say. Coach Wagner has a talented bunch of players over there, and they have only gotten better. They went undefeated in our district and even beat teams from much bigger schools. On the plus side, we did manage to win two doubles matches against their reserves. The Hurricanes showed today why they are the team of the future in our district for the boys, as they almost managed to score a victory over us with their top 4 seeds missing. Our program still has some catching up to do, and I think our boys are beginning to really understand this.

Today's team match came down to the #2 Doubles which was still the last match going with the Wildcats dead even with Hurricanes at 4 wins apiece. My second and third seed doubles teams were both playing up today. I had decided this heading into the match, for two reasons. First, Eric & Corey and Jae & Jonathan will all be playing doubles in the upcoming District Tournament. So going up against a tough opponent in East Hamilton, I wanted to take advantage of this and have them play the best possible competition today. I also wanted to allow my #7 & 8 seeds some more match experience. Corey & Eric took care of business, while Russ & Alex played well in a losing cause. That left it all up to Jonathan & Jae. They were the last ones to finish in singles, so they were the last to go on in doubles. They played a near flawless match and won easily 8-3 to seal the victory-- our third district win.

On the girls side of the house, once again I had attendance issues. Two of my top three girls are involved with the Hixson Spring Choir Concert, and could only play singles, while two others were absent. Heading into the match down three is a serious uphill battle. We managed two wins in singles, but could muster no more. Here are the results:

East Hamilton Girls Defeat Hixson Girls 7-2

Girls Singles Results:

Allison Cowart (H) def. Russ Rebennack/Alex Shuford 8-4

Up Next: Our last regular season match is the continuance of our Red Bank Match which was shortened due to inclement weather last week. We are very much in the hunt for a win on the boys side. Play will start at 3:30pm at the Racquet Club.

How Sweep It Is!

For the first time this season our tennis teams managed a sweep! Both our boys and girls teams won easily. The girls even managed a win while forfeiting #6 singles and #3 doubles, because Ashton Summers and Caroline Daugherty were both absent. None of the girls who played lost. The boys won five of six singles matches and took another in doubles. I was able to give George and Dylan the day off in doubles, and Russ Rebennack and Alex Shufford (pictured below) played admirably in their first real match together at #3. They lost 8-5, but in order to get the matches done a little sooner, they actually played Lookout Valley's #2 team.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 229px; height: 320px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_BrV1vbE42B8/S9twn_kID9I/AAAAAAAAAC4/kfvTyvYrNIY/s320/Alex.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5466086405124394962" />

It's great to win, but it is even better to improve. I know our kids can get a little discouraged when they look at our won/loss record, but here's positive proof that we have improved: Last year our boys got blown out by Lookout Valley 7-0. Christian Eaves beat George Ozborn 6-0 (we played abbreviated pro sets due to the weather), today he was up 3-1, although Eaves didn't allow him to win another game, the score looks more lopsided than it was. I think he lost three games in row at deuce. A couple of points here or there, and George pulls this match out. Corey Phillips beat a guy today 8-3 that he lost to a year ago 6-3. Huge improvement. The guy Dylan Millwood beat today 8-4 beat our #2 last year 6-3 (Dylan played #4 in the match last year!). I am really proud of this bunch.

Here are the results:

Hixson Girls Defeat Lookout Valley Girls 7-2

Girls Singles:

Allison Cowart (H) def. We almost got our match with Red Bank in today. Coach Wagner and I had some great help from parents and players alike, and we did manage to finish some of the matches, but not quite all of them. All the matches that finished will count, and we've got the scores of the matches that were halted due to the second rain/hail shower. Those matches will resume when we meet a week from Wednesday on May 5th at the Racquet Club-- start time: 3:30 pm.

Don't forget, uniform money must be paid by Friday! Give your checks made payable to Hixson High School to Mrs. Carr (the school bookkeeper): $40 for the boys and $60 for the girls.

Up next: Lookout Valley on Friday at the Racquet Club. Lookout Valley is no longer in our district, and I've not heard much about them. Apologies to the three who were ready to play, but I didn't think it was fair to the opposing team to have them show up and play a skeleton crew.

I warned the boys yesterday that Central would be eager to avenge their early season district loss against us, and that they should expect every match today to be tough. Although we ended up winning by the same score, 6-3, I thought the Purple Pounders played much better this time around, and with no seniors in their top six, should be quite a bit better next year.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 229px; height: 320px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_BrV1vbE42B8/S9DsKl7KcdI/AAAAAAAAACo/TNhEQoApPvA/s320/Corey.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5463126014723518930" />

Lots of bright spots on the day, but in particular I'd like to single out Corey Phillips (#3 seed singles, #2 Doubles-- pictured above) and Jae Yoo (#6 seed singles, #3 Doubles-- pictured below), who were both perfect on the day in singles and doubles.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 229px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_BrV1vbE42B8/S9DsSUrpoWI/AAAAAAAAACw/a0qWffKyrzQ/s320/Jae.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5463126147534004578" />

Here are the results:

Hixson Boys Defeat Central Boys 6-3

Singles:

John Mitchell (C) def. The only reason I've got time to do this is because our match with East Hamilton today was rained out. All the indoor courts were booked at the Racquet Club, so I got an impromptu afternoon off. I think the teams could use the day as well. We'll get back to it tomorrow.

It seems like a year ago, but a week ago today, we traveled back to Warner Park to play two very good CSAS squads for the second time this season. This match was supposed to be held at the Racquet Club, but our courts were still not ready. Coach Pate, a truly class act in high school athletics, was gracious enough to let us play at his home courts in lieu of rescheduling the date. Whitney Clack and Jonathan Craft were the only bright spots for either team, as CSAS showed why they are one of the teams to beat in our upcoming District tournament. The Boys and Girls took their lumps, but I felt everyone played well. Most impressive was Russ Rebennack (pictured above), who got his first varsity start in singles. He nearly pulled off the upset, losing 7-2 in a tiebreaker. Dylan Millwood (pictured below) also played a fantastic match, albeit a losing one. He too lost in a tiebreaker. The Champions Club (pictured above) has been hosting this tournament for several years. It is my understanding that Hixson may have taken part in it before, but it has been several years since our last appearance.

For those of you who are unfamiliar with the tournament, there are two draws: A & B. The eight teams in the A Divison play regular single elimination tournament for each seed with a consolation draw (with every player guaranteed three singles matches and every doubles team is guaranteed three matches as well). The level of play is generally higher in the A Division, and it is a goal of mine to get our teams to that level. The B Divison was comprised of four teams and used a round robin format for each seed. Our Girls team got to play three teams they'd never faced before in Walker Valley, McMinn and Grace Academy. Our Boys were not quite so lucky, as they got to play only one new team in Grace Academy, along with CSAS and Rhea County (can you believe that?).

Too many matches for me to post all the scores, so I'll just mention that the girls finished third out of the four teams in their group and the boys finished in the cellar. I don't like to make excuses, but I'm pretty sure both CSAS and Rhea County were better than a couple of the teams in the A Division, and I was missing one of my top six. All things considered, I'm pretty happy about the experience gained by both my teams. I saw some amazing play from just about everybody on the team. Next year they will know what to expect, and we'll certainly be better prepared for our District Tourney in a couple of weeks.

Also, I would like to publicly thank Richard Millwood (Dylan's dad) for treating everyone who played in the tourney to a post-tournament dinner at Ci-Ci's Pizza. After playing six matches in two days, the kids certainly deserved it!

Up Next: Central at Lakeside Park. Our second match versus this District opponent. Our boys need to be focused, they won the first time, but I'm sure the Pounders would like to get a little revenge. Our girls nearly won with only five girls in the line-up. A sweep is possible!

We've Reached the Mid Point.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 228px; height: 320px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_BrV1vbE42B8/S7PvSrM-dMI/AAAAAAAAAB4/05YoUvE6ruA/s320/Kayla.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5454966677789635778" />

Kayla Morgan (above) teamed up with Torey Hart (below) to win their match in doubles against the Owls of Ooltewah.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 229px; height: 320px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_BrV1vbE42B8/S7PvoLpzsaI/AAAAAAAAACA/cehsZhBUSBI/s320/Torey.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5454967047277752738" />

Well we've played seven matches and we have six matches plus two tournaments to go. Whew! I realize our record does not indicate much improvement, but I can see it. Slowly but surely, these kids are starting to buy into the things I've been teaching them this year. I am super-excited about meeting up with some of these teams again to really gauge how much we've accomplished this season.

Our last match of the first half of the season started with a nightmarish trip up I-75 to the Ooltewah exit. It wasn't quite rush hour, but there was a lot of traffic, compounded by four lanes being bottle-necked into two lanes a couple of miles from our exit. Coach Buchanan completely understood, and he allowed our players some time to warm up properly, even though most of our team didn't show up until right around our 3:30pm start time.

Due to the late start and a few close matches, I didn't leave the courts till nearly 7:30pm. I did allow most of the team to head home early, and after the finish of #3 Girls Doubles, I was sorry I did. What a match! Torey Hart and Kayla Morgan (both of whom learned how to play tennis this year) were in a battle. Down five games to three, these two clawed their way back winning five of the next six games to win 8-6! More importantly, they did it the right way. They were being aggressive at the net. They were covering the open court. They were keeping the ball away from the opposing net player. All the things I preach in practice-- the match even ended with Torey (who was playing at the net) putting a short ball right in the belly of the opposing net player. She immediately apologized, and when I asked her about it, she said: "I was aiming at her feet." Perfect!

It was the only win we got against a very good Ooltewah team, and I couldn't have been more proud!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 229px; height: 320px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_BrV1vbE42B8/S7PxVDQRMpI/AAAAAAAAACI/LWk_8LFuds0/s320/Allison.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5454968917628891794" />

Allison Cowart (pictured above) almost pulled off a huge upset against Katie Woodham at the #1 Girls Singles spot. I've known Katie for a few years now, and I have never seen her that flustered. Allison's backhand slice was giving Katie all she could handle. Katie prevailed in the tiebreaker, but Allison played one heckuva match!

Here are the results:

Ooltewah Girls def. We had to move Monday's match against Red Bank to their home courts at Rivermont Park. When we meet them again on April 27, we will play on our home courts-- so please make a note of that on your schedules. It looks like we are going to have to move Wednesday's match against Ooletwah as well, but I won't know for sure until later this afternoon. I will let the team know today at practice. Ooletwah's home courts are located on their campus and you can find directions here: 6123 Mountain View Road.

As for the match against the Lions, it went pretty much as I suspected. The Lady Lions remain undefeated in District play and barring unforeseen circumstances should remain that way for the rest of the season. I had a full, healthy roster but we were no match for their depth and experience. Coach Wagner, having swept the singles, called off the dogs during the doubles matches and our girls got two out of three wins and lost the third in a close one 6-8. All in all it was a pleasant experience, and I'm proud of my girls for giving their best effort against a very tough team.

As I suggested in Sunday's post, I really liked our chances on the boys side. We almost pulled off the win. Heading into the doubles we had to sweep to secure a team win. We fell just short: taking two of three. Again I'd like to praise George Ozborn, who was not himself as he had been sick all weekend, and was still feeling under the weather at match time but insisted on playing both singles and doubles. I'm speculating, but I think if George was feeling better, we would have won this match going away. I can't wait till the Lions visit us in April. Jonathan Craft played superbly again winning his singles and doubles matches and big congratulations to Eric Barr (pictured below) for picking up his first singles win of the season!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 229px; height: 320px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_BrV1vbE42B8/S7IFsPsQuxI/AAAAAAAAABw/c19P6bTx4o0/s320/Eric.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5454428356383652626" />

Here are the results:

Red Bank Girls def. The Lady Owls might be the toughest team our girls face this season. The boys will be very good as well. We were outplayed by both Silverdale and East Hamilton. Silverdale Academy is a private school with plenty of experience. The one really bright spot for Hixson was George Ozborn (pictured above), who played one of the best matches I've ever seen him play in the two seasons that I've worked with him.

Here are the Silverdale results:

Silverdale Girls def. Hixson 8-1

Girls Singles:

Lauren Milligan (S) def. Allison Cowart (H) 8-1
Jessica Christensen (S) def. Candace Cline (H) 9-7
Kelsey Dalrymple (S) def. Whitney Clack (H) 8-0
Megan West (S) def. Torey Hart (H) 8-1
Molly Burns (S) def. Kayla Morgan (H) 8-1
Hannah Mench (S) def. Caroline Daugherty (H) 8-0

Girls Doubles:

Kristina Woods/ Sarah Pardue (S) def. Cline/Clack (H) 8-4
Cowart/Hart (H) def. Burns/Mench (S) 9-8 (7-5)
Megan Berry/Olivia Seay (S) def. Morgan/Daugherty (H) 8-5

Silverdale Boys def. Hixson Boys 8-1

Boys Singles:

George Ozborn (H) def. Alex Lowry (S) 8-6
Andrew Wicks (S) def. Dylan Millwood (H) 8-3
Reid Stubbefield (S) def. Corey Phillips (H) 8-6
Alex Nichols (S) def. Eric Barr (H) 8-1
Mitchell Brown (S) def. Jonathan Craft (H) 8-0
Jared Defrise (S) def. Jae Yoo (H) 8-3

Boys Doubles:

Lowry/Wicks (S) def. Ozborn/Millwood (H) 9-8 (7-5)
Stubbefield/Brown (S) def. Phillips/Barr (H) 8-4
Nichols/Defrise (S) def. Craft/Yoo (H) 8-3

The East Hamilton match was a learning experience. They have a very young team (there is no senior class at East Hamilton yet), but plenty of talent. Unfortunately, they look like the team to beat in our district for the next couple of years on the Boys side as their top two seeds are only in 9th and 10th grade. Still, if my boys are willing to work, I'm hoping we can close that gap sooner rather than later. Nice win for Jonathan Craft at #5 singles (pictured below).

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 229px; height: 320px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_BrV1vbE42B8/S7ATZ_SlyQI/AAAAAAAAABo/8UYNfabCpOs/s320/JC.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5453880485952735490" />

My girls had a rough time with two of the top three seeds (Allison and Ashton) out due to illness. All the remaining girls played valiantly and even managed a win in doubles. We'll give the Lady Hurricanes a run for their money when they come to the Racquet Club in April-- I promise.

Here are the results:

East Hamilton Girls def. Hixson Girls 8-1

Girls Singles:

Hilleary Chandler (EH) def. Candace Cline, 8-1
Abigail Ware (EH) def. Whitney Clack, 8-4
Gabrielle Fern (EH) def. Torey Hart, 8-1
Ashley Riner (EH) def. Kayla Morgan, 8-0
Paige Clark (EH) def. Caroline Daugherty, 8-2
Joanna Tang (EH) wins by forfeit

Girls Doubles:

Cline/Clack (H) def. Katie Cotton/Nicole Rice, 8-4
Kayla Dyer/Ally Crum (EH) def. Hart/Morgan, 9-7
(EH) wins #3 doubles by forfeit

East Hamilton Boys def. Hixson boys 8-1

Boys Singles:

Zach McCormick (EH) def. George Ozborn, 8-1
Nick McCormick (EH) def. Dylan Millwood, 8-1
Daniel Jung (EH) def. Corey Phillips, 8-3
Ryan Williamson (EH) def. Eric Barr, 8-1
Jonathan Craft (H) def. David Templeton, 9-8 (7-3)
River Mark (EH) def. Jae Yoo, 8-3

Boys Doubles:

McCormick/McCormick (EH) def. Ozborn/Millwood, 8-1
Jung/Williamson (EH) def. Phillips/Barr, 8-3
Tej Dhond/Randsom Mark (EH) def. Craft/Yoo, 8-1

Up Next: Red Bank. From all accounts they look like the toughest team in our district on the Girls side. Their boys, however, are not as experienced and it should be a close match.

Directions to East Hamilton Match.

Hey folks, we had a tough one today against Silverdale. No rain today, and it actually felt like Spring for much of today's match. The clouds were looming there toward the end, but for the most part it was pleasant.

Congratulations to my Boys who earned their first district win. They won seven of the nine matches and lost another in a tough tiebreaker against the Purple Pounders of Chattanooga Central. Corey Phillips, Jae Yoo and Jonathan Craft (my 4, 5, and 6 seeds) really carried the load today by sweeping their singles and doubles matches. Very satisfying win.

The girls also played well, but were forced to forfeit two matches due to injury and illness. Still they almost pulled off the amazing upset. We had a chance with our last doubles match on the court. As a coach, I like my chances if that's the case. We'll see Central later in the year, and hopefully we'll have a full, healthy line-up.

Next week is another tough week with matches on Monday, Tuesday & Wednesday. With that in mind and the weather looking good for Saturday, I'm having a mandatory practice on Saturday 3:00pm to 5:00pm at the Racquet Club on the Hard Courts. I say "mandatory" but if you've already made plans to go out of town, or have something else going on, just let me know.

Here are the results:

Central Girls def. If you haven't had a chance to watch Gael Monfils (near court) play, then prepare to be amazed. His athleticism aside, what I want all my kids to take away from this video, is that Monfils (pronounced Mon-FEECE) never tries to do too much. Even the winner he hits at the end of the point looks effortless. When he's being chased from side to side, he hits the ball with spin and height and recovers toward the middle of the court. Too many times I see my players trying to do too much when they are off balance. This is not the time to try to hit a winner. Instead, throw up a lob and hope to keep the rally alive. I realize Monfils makes it look easy, but we can all learn something from that point. Okay, enough X's and O's. Here's the recap:

Those weather.com people have no idea what is going to happen do they? Again, the forecast was for a little sunshine today, but I don't think we ever got any. Instead, it was another cloudy, breezy day-- though not quite as cold as yesterday.

We lost to a tough district team today in CSAS, but we also scored some nice victories, and on the Boys' side, we maybe should have had a couple of others. Hats off to Jonathan Craft who won easily in just his second match ever in the number six slot. He and Jae Yoo had their chances, but lost in a tough tiebreaker in the number three doubles slot.

On the girls's side, Candace Cline coasted to an 8-1 victory in the #2 position, but we fell in all the other matches. Please keep Kayla Morgan in your thoughts and prayers this evening, as she had a bit of an issue with her knee and had to retire late in her match. She seemed fine a little while after, and was even asking to play in the doubles, but I decided we needed to err on the side of caution. Thanks to Caroline Daugherty for filling in admirably in the number three doubles position. Caroline got to play an exhibition yesterday against Rhea County, but this was her first real tennis match. Last year I did not have that luxury, you can't know how relieved I am to actually have a bench this year.

I'll keep my eye on the weather, but it does look like we are in for some rain on Wednesday night and Thursday. I'll wait as long as I can before canceling Thursday's match. If we can't play, I'm going to try to get us an indoor court so that we can get some practice in. Well that's it for now.

Here are the results:

CSAS Girls Def. The skies looked like they might start spitting snow at any moment, and I don't think the wind chill ever got above 40 degrees. To add insult to injury, we had to play a formidable opponent in the Golden Eagles. Still, our kids played their hearts out. Hats off to a well coached squad from Rhea County!

We had several members playing their first ever match (Kayla Morgan, Torey Hart, Jonathan Craft) and a couple others making their High School Tennis debut (Whitney Clack and Russ Rebennack). All in all, I must say that I'm quite pleased with the way things went. I'd like to single out the outstanding play of Freshman, Whitney Clack, who persevered through two tough tie breakers to stay perfect on the day. She won her singles match 9-7 in the tiebreak, and along with Candace Cline was able to outlast their Rhea County opponents 7-4 in the breaker. For those of you new to the sport, our teams play pro-sets to 8 games. If they are tied after 14 games (7-7), they play a tiebreaker to 7 points, but you have to win by two. It makes for some exciting tennis, as any of you who stuck around for the end of that doubles match can attest.

Here are the results:

Rhea County Girls Defeat Hixson Girls 7-2

Girls Singles:

Kelci Fredericks (RC) def. I'll be posting stuff here throughout the year in order help keep everyone informed of what's going on with the Hixson High School Tennis Teams. Let's get started, shall we?

The season kicks off in full gear this week with matches scheduled for Monday, Tuesday and Thursday. Looking at the extended forecast, it looks like we should be fine on M & T, but it looks bad for Thursday-- hopefully that will change between now and then.

As for the uniforms, I apologize. I think the girls are getting theirs in on Monday (fingers crossed!) and hopefully the boys will too. I ordered the boys' uniforms at the beginning of the month, but there was a slight mix up between the the school's accountant and the company we ordered the uniforms from. Long story short, Mrs. Carr just sent them a copy of our Purchase Order via Fax on Friday morning, so the uniforms were still sitting in California as of Friday. We asked for expedited shipping, but who knows with the weekend. If all else fails, we are just going to wear the Hixson Tennis T-Shirts that I've given everybody. The boys can wear black shorts and the girls a black or white skirt.

Well, that is all for now. Hope to see you at the matches this week! And as always, I welcome any comments or questions.
